The clients came to Atria looking for a way to integrate the functions of their family into the space of a single family dwelling. After considering a move to the suburbs with their two young children, it was decided to instead remodel their much loved space on the north side of Chicago. In conjunction with their architect, a divided floor plan of small rooms was transformed into an integrated, open space to accomodate cooking, socializing, relaxing , and most importantly - interactive family living.

The kitchen/family room resides in one large space, occupying most of the first floor. A combination of wood flooring, handmade cabinetry, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances were united to create a comfortable and warm environment. A long, three level island spans the full length of the kitchen. The three levels encompass a standard height workspace, an elevated level for an aesthetically pleasing view from the dining & living room, and a lowered level that serves as both a breakfast spot for the children and as a transition into the family room. Other unique features of the kitchen include detailed interiors housing many storage options, an entire wall flanked with utility cabinets, and an area near the dining room for wine storage and glass fronted cabinetry for the display of wine and cocktail glasses.

As the project expanded, details of the kitchen found their way into the rest of the first floor. Atria was given the opportunity to design and produce the entertainment center, fireplace, storage cubbies, closet doors, and as a final touch, the front door - all made of natural cherry.
